The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins, or the 7 Cardinal Sins, are a classification of objectionable vices that has been used since early Christian times to educate and instruct followers concerning humanity's tendency to sin. The Deadly Sins do not belong to an additional category of sin. Rather, they are the sins that are seen as the origin of the other sins.

Beginning in the early 14th century, the popularity of the seven deadly sins as a theme among European artists of the time eventually helped to ingrain them in many areas of Catholic culture and Catholic consciousness in general throughout the world.

The original deadly sins are not quite the list you find now in modern times. We can of course trace the origin back to the bible, but the biblical version is quite different from the list we know today. The Book of Proverbs states: “six things the Lord hateth, and the seventh His soul detesteth” and are as follows;

“A Proud Look” - This is of course Pride. The only sin to have never been changed.

“A Lying Tongue” - Nobody likes a liar.

“Hands That Shed Innocent Blood” - Sounds like murder, you know, Thou Shall Not Kill.

“A Heart That Devises Wicked Plots” - Congress should watch out for this one.

“Feet That Are Swift To Run Into Mischief” - Someone who goes looking for trouble?

“A Deceitful Witness That Uttereth Lies” - Thou shall not bare false witness.

“Him That Soweth Discord Among Brethren” - Trouble makers suck.

Over the past few hundred years, much like the bible itself, it has been changed around and reinterpreted again and again before evolving into what we know today. The modern 7 deadly sins are as follows;

Lust - is usually thought of as excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature. This one wasn't always on the list but you know those christians, always afraid of sex and nudity.

Gluttony - is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste. This always seems to be applied to food, I think it could be expanded from that but either way, fat people should watch out.

Greed - is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth. Like millionaires who play the lottery or members of congress who sell out the people to fill their own pockets.

Sloth - is often defined as laziness and indifference . All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Wrath - is described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger leading to self-destructiveness, violence, and hate. I'd be willing to bet all wars fall into this category.

Envy - is resentment of another person has something they perceive themselves as lacking, and wish the other person to be deprived of it. Like the commies that believe anyone who makes good money should give it all away to people who chose not to work.

Pride - is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and excessive love of self. This is the only sin that has never been changed or altered. The only one to have stayed on the list since biblical times. Pride is also the most prevalent of all the sins, from Hollywood to the White House, this is the worst sin of them all.
